Sunday Missive
English is forever fascinating. Nicely researched Kate!
Thanks, Alia! 🤓
In one of the last writing courses I taught, when I introduced the module on connotative language, I was very surprised by the number of students who'd never heard of it.
Never heard of the term or the concept? Yikes. Great idea for a future piece: denotative vs connotative.
Yep, that’s the lesson I taught. I assumed they had gotten the basics in K-12.
Did they at least recognize the concept?
Yes, they did. They were quite taken with the concept, in fact!
Thank goodness!
I usually have to look up homophones to make sure I'm spelling them correctly--and I'm using the word in the way I think I'm using it.
Don’t you wish more people had that habit? Sensitivity to meaning and awareness of words are so integral to communication and good writing.
