I am so sorry, Kate. It's hard for those of us who read and think and examine and care about the greater good to rationalise what has happened, and it's depressing to be confronted with the reality of human nature, it's insular fears and short sightedness. But if there's anything that can be learned from the first time round, it's that there are always people behind the scenes working in the best interest of peace and democracy, and they will do what they can to pull the country through the next four years. I hope these years pass quickly and that what transpires is enough to scare the communal senses back into sensibility. The world moves in swings and roundabouts, usually. A x

Thank you so much for your kind words, wisdom, and perspective, Alia. I read your comment yesterday, and it really helped to know that so many people understand what we are fighting for and against. It is frightening, and we cannot take representative government for granted for a minute; however, today the sun still rose and kids played outside at the school next door, and life goes on, just with a reframing of what is next.

I apologize to the rest of the world for the failure of our country to get this one right, because it will affect others who depend on us making sound choices. Ukraine. NATO. Israel, Palestine, struggling democracies who look with hope to our baby republic for their hopes to be realized. It can just become too much, but as long as we are on the wakeup list every morning, there is work to be done. Thanks again for such supportive and kind words when I really needed to hear them. 💙 Kate

It's not for you to apologise, Kate, but I understand why you feel the need 💛 The world has been teetering for a long while now.

I have waited all day to read your post; something that succinctly sums up how I feel. I wish I could say it's easier watching this insanity from Canada, but even from my rural, distant expat home, the feeling of disillusionment (and suspicion) is just as great. Thank you for sharing. There's so many of us that need bolstering right now. Will be subscribing!

Thank you, Jan, for your kind thoughts and support. I just don’t know what’s going to happen and how we will get through it, but we will. Peace, Kate

I believe your instinct that there was some serious, pervasive interference going on, of a yet unfathomable nature, is correct. I hope enough people come around to that point of view to demand an investigation while we still have the time. Thank you for putting into words exactly how I feel this wretched day also, and for the Emily Dickinson poem.

Kate Morgan Reade; Some of the finest work of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman were written during times of slavery or Civil War.

It is a poignant contrast between Kamala Harris graciously calling DJT to concede, Kamala Harris concession of the race but NOT conceding the fight or the hope to continue the long war towards victory in human dignity for all.

It is remarkable that DJT holds such a sway, for all of his racist rhetoric, and the worse race-baiting and hatred of Yale educated JD Vance.

It is a sad commentary that this deplorable ticket gets more than 5% of the vote, much less a win.

Remember, Kamala Harris was given only 107 days to accomplish what a well-organized team performs in 1-1/2 to 2-years.

Kamala Harris ran a charismatic campaign, and I look to Kamala Harris taking a leading role in opposition during the next four years.

We pick up and march forward and work HARD, which Kamala Harris reminds us is GOOD work.

And, in deeply affectionate memory of John Lewis, we make GOOD trouble.

The race is conceded, but we are in a long term fight for human dignity and equality.

In this small, isolated household, at the moment it's a tossup between fight and flight. Im Moment sieht Deutschland besonders schön aus. Nur 20% sind Nazis.

Aber kann irgendjemand Asyl in Deutschland beantragen?

Leider nicht. Aber Asyl is nicht nötig, andere Methoden sind möglich.

I will look this up, but wondering about your thoughts / observations re: Americans retiring there?

There it is: only 20% are Nazis in Germany. Does the goddamn U.S. have to learn the hard way? WTAF is wrong with people?

Stephen Schiff: Meine zweite Heimat befindet sich in der Rheinpfalz. Meine Lieblingsstädte sind Bad Dürkheim and Heidelberg (Baden-Württemberg),

But I can go for long visits. I have friends in Rheinpfalz over 40 years, down to the third generation.

I will continue living, though, in the suburb of Memphis near my grandkids.

I am very good in opposition!

Ich reise auch oft nach Deutschland; es gefählt mir am besten in den großen Städten, sowie München, Berlin und Hamburg.

I've been doing it long enough that I am now losing dear friends, many of whom were younger than me.

I'm sorry for your losses; it's especially hard when they are younger.
