Webster’s Unabridged Second, given to me when I was about eight. This tome belonged to my Great Aunt Hazel, who was a librarian and verbihund, and passed along to me. I spent many hours sitting on the floor browsing, reading strange new words and noticing how they were related to the entries before and after them; deciphering pronunciation symbols; seeing how words were stressed and broken into syllables; looking at the color plates of flags, flowers, animals and all kinds of interesting things while running my hands over the thick, glossy pages, and carefully replacing the tissue on top of each shiny page.
