Amy Lowell, James Russell Lowell, and, Robert Lowell (a short life: 1917 - 1977) were from a Brahmin family with heritage back to the Mayflower.
James Russell Lowell lived such a tragic life, with the trauma of losing two, well-loved wives, and most of his children!
Lowell certainly is in the heritage, along with the Transcendentalists, along with Emily Dickinson, we need to claim.
My favorite Lowell, though, is Robert Lowell.
Robert Lowell had a rich spiritual life with one of America's greater poets, Elisabeth Bishop.
Robert Lowell wrote a modern version of the Ur-Tragedy, the Trilogy of Aeschylus, The Fall of the Oresteia: (1) Agamemnon; (2) Libation Bearers; and (3) Eumenides.
Significance: Without Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, there would have been no Shakespeare.
Robert Lowell also wrote poetry and drama after stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Robert Lowell is among my favorite poets, reflecting his spiritual battles within and without Catholicism and struggles with alcohol and mental illness.
Along with Robinson Jeffers (Cawdor; Medea).
But the Lowells gave us some of our leading poets.

He is new to me, and as I was browsing through the old tome online, courtesy of Project Gutenberg, I was drawn to his frankness—especially for the time period in which he lived and wrote. Sometimes it is tempting only to read modern poets because they are easy to find, but there is history and much to be learned by staying within public domain authors!
